Flotation

Foam Flotation for Your Every-Need

One of the most popular uses of foam is for flotation purposes. Floating docks are seen in bodies of water everywhere. EPS foam is a great source to keep your dock afloat due to its waterproof quality and its ability to still float even if it has been punctured. The foam is lightweight, making it easy for you to transport the dock and environmentally friendly. Our EPS flotation blocks are available in an infinite number of sizes and each cubic foot will float 55 lbs of weight on it.

We know that many public bodies of water now require encapsulated floats under docks and we can provide that for you! Contact us for more information, see below.

Here are some examples of how our flotation blocks were used with past customers

Pier Flotation

Pier using EPS flotation blocksExpanded Polystyrene flotation blocks can be put under a pier to keep it afloat in any body of water. One customer used these blocks for his pier and ordered .9 lb Virgin EPS, 12" x 48" x 48" sizes that were cut to order. The pier was built and the foam blocks fit tightly underneath. They can be attached through glue or polyethylene straps to the frame. For more details on the pier construction go to our past projects page: http://univfoam.com/category/floatation

EPS Boat Cradles

Expanded Polystyrene blocks can provide a safe and secure storage option for boats. For this particular boat 1.5 lb density EPS boat blocks were used to raise up the 60' long carbon fiber catamaran. The EPS boat cradles were 36" x 36" x 36" and allowed for elevated storage that was safe, while preventing damage to the boat.

EPS Wheels on the Water

EPS WheelsOne of our customers invented the Water Jeep and used EPS wheels to make it happen! He ordered four 1 lb density, 72"x 48" EPS customized giant wheels. He attached the wheels to his land jeep and coated the wheels with Line-X truck bed liner to increase their durability. Unfortunately it only moves 7 mph but its better then nothing!

EPS floating docks

EPS Flotation RaftEPS foam floating blocks are great resources for floating docks and party rafts. This customer ordered eight 1lb Virgin EPS foam 15" x 24" x 96". With his blocks installed in his 'Floating Raft', it "barely sits 3 inches in the water". The customer also installed a motor to it so they can cruise around the pond gliding on the water's surface.

EPS can paddle

EPS Foam Paddle Board
Customers have created state of the art paddle boards using EPS foam. This particular board is a custom carbon fiber, .9 lb Virgin EPS foam paddle board and was entered into a race in Key West, Florida. The board came in 3rd place! The board was able to endure the choppiness of the water and proved to be more sturdy than the other boards in the race. Choosing to make the board from EPS foam and finishing it with carbon fiber made the board a sure success.

EPS flotation blocks can be used in Commercial Pond Aeration

Pond Aeration System using EPS foam blocks for FlotationEPS blocks are used in pond aeration systems throughout the world. These systems are increasingly popular in lagoons and ponds. Reliant Water Technologies
encapsulated a 2 lb density block on the inside top of the aerator. The EPS foam makes for a more stable unit and allows for 3 men to be on top of the system in the water without sinkage.

Foam for boat seats

Polyethylene Boat Seat
Boat seats are generally made from polyethylene foam either 1 lb or 1.5 lb's. These seats provide for comfort while riding on the boat and as a great flotation device in the case of emergencies. In general, polyethylene has the ability to float 55 lbs per cubic foot. Cushions frequently come in sizes 2"x 12"x 72" which would be equivalent to floating 55 lbs.

EPS Insulation Projects

Expanded Polystyrene Foam can be a great insulator for inside and outside of foundations, roof insulation, and under slab insulation and floors.

Expanded Polystyrene does not absorb moisture and keeps the heat in. Check out the projects that have been completed using EPS Insulation boards

Insulated ceilings using EPS insulation

Ceilings can be insulated using EPS foam. A customer ordered 1lb EPS recycled and precut foam panels that were  4” x 48” x 60” providing an 15.4 R-Value. They are great for homes in every environment including the city, the country, and suburbs.

The Trump International Hotel in New York City used EPS insulation in their new restaurant. They ordered 3 lb density, full 60 psi EPS foam. The results were great.

Using EPS insulation boards in a house

In Florida a family contacted us for foam to insulate their ceiling. They ordered .9lb Virgin EPS foam sheets. These sheets have an R-Value of 3.85 per inch.

Because their roof trusses were 24" O.C. the foam sheets were precut to 5"x22- 1/2"x96" making them easily installable for each bay of the ceiling.

Prefabricated Dome Roof

EPS is waterproof, making it a great insulator. Titan Environmental uses EPS foam sheets to insulate roof systems. Many of the roofs they do are prefabricated liquid storage tank roof systems that require insulation that will have a high R-value and the ability to be waterproof. They cut and shaped their foam with a how wire bow cutter and a hot knife. They coated the foam after it was secured to the dome roof to ensure that it would be waterproof.

Roof Insulation between raftersThe company, Dixie Pole Buildings, reached out to us for 4" thick pieces of EPS Foam Insulation. They use this insulation in the roofs of garages, barns, and similar buildings. They needed insulation that had a high R-Value which is why they went with EPS. The pieces were precut to fit in-between the rafters of the roof. They saved time upon installation due to the pieces being precut upon delivery.

Ice Rink that has EPS Insulation Underneath

In California, the City of Temecula needed to insulate the bottom of their ice rink for their Holiday celebration- "Winter Fest". They needed 125 pieces of  1.80lb Virgin EPS Foam that was 1"x48"x96". It was a success!

Their artisans hand sculpt the foam to create the desired shape. The foam is then coated with a fiber filled resin for a structure coat that hardens followed by a texture coat and then hand painted to create the finished product. To the left is an example of one of their projects.

Walrus EPS Foam model for Land's End CatalogSturms Special Effects created a full size model of a walrus out of EPS to be a new model for the company Land's End.  The initial concept sketch was transferred onto the EPS block and then carved into the walrus. For the photo-shoot he was dressed, photographed, and photoshopped for the cover of their catalog.

Cake Dummy displayEPS foam is also used to create cake dummies and cake pop stands. Cake dummies are often used in bakeries for display cakes or in real cakes to make them appear larger than they really are. To the left is an example of on that one of our customers created.

Lego EPS Foam man powered suitHarvest Time, a church, did a sermon series called LEGOS, connecting with Christ. They ordered 2" think and 4" thick foam sheets. They created a fully functional Lego man suit to create a fun environment and background for pictures.

EPS Foam "Journey Tree" statue Xpressive GraphiX created a marketing piece for Muskingum County Business Incubator. They created the "Journey Tree" which represented an entrepreneurs personal journey from a simple idea to an enormous success by embracing the support of the Business Incubator. The concept was born from a series of brainstorming sessions with a team of people from the MCBI and Xpressive graphiX. From the very onset they wanted to do something “different”, something that would make a statement. EPS and Styrofoam Brand foam were considered for the project.  They decided to utilize EPS foam to make their brainchild a reality.
They ordered 4 foam blocks measuring 10"x4"x3", each weighing 125 lbs. They loved using the foam because of its light weight medium making it mobile, and it was easily assembled and disassembled. They were able to cut the foam with minimal effort in order to begin forming the shapes which were than affixed to the tree. Every piece of this enormous sculpture, which stood 12′ tall x 8′ wide x 6′ deep was completely hand crafted.

Styrofoam - The Number 6 Is More Important Than You Think

Plastic Number 6 Symbol

Have you ever heard that Styrofoam™ Brand foam or Expanded Polystyrene foam cannot be recycled? This is a common myth that most people believe to be true. The fact of the matter is, both kinds of foam can be recycled!

Plastic number 6 is specifically polystyrene. Polystyrene is a material found in both Styrofoam and EPS. According to the 2012 EPS Packaging Recycling Rate Study conducted by the EPS Industry Alliance, in 2012 alone more than 93 million pounds of expanded polystyrene foam was recycled. Also, Industries appeared to recycle more than consumers.

The study also found that EPS alone represents the highest occurrences of plastic recycled out of all the plastics on the market, making up 50% of all post use recycled polystyrene.

Foam products are primarily made up of air. EPS is 90% of the air we breathe. This is what helps make this product recyclable. Foam does not have CFC’s in it or any other harmful chemicals to our environment.

Unfortunately, your curbside waste facility/recycling program may not accept plastic #6. This is not because they do not wish to recycle it; it is because the foam is useless if it is contaminated with excess liquid, food, and dirt from the other items in the large recycling bin at the facility. Washing the material is an easy fix to this problem but many facilities do not offer this service. Some states are now starting to establish specific polystyrene foam programs for recycling use.

What should you do with your polystyrene after your done with it? You can search for local recyclers in your area that will accept plastic number 6. You can also use your foam for other household needs such as a craft. Lastly, if there are no local places that accept plastic #6, AFPR offers a mail in program that you can send your polystyrene foam to.
